The Tanning of America

So, yesterday I first got wind of some new book out via a Necole Bitchie retweet on my Twitter timeline. Today, I saw another courtesy of Mary J. Blige along with a few other notable tweets mentioning some book about tanning.  Black women could care less about a tanning, so what's all the rave? Obviously, this required my attention (lol). OK. All jokes aside. The anticipated book The Tanning of Americais expected to shed light on the history of hip hop and its socioeconomic influence; offering invaluable insight into the nuances of the new-age consumer and how corporations, marketers and trendsetters alike can properly engage a multicultural marketplace.

The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy
Author Steve Stoute (Founder & CEO of brand marketing firm Translation) is well-known for his marketing genius and hence, ability to translate diverse multicultural trends to corporate America.  "Today's consumer is a mindset, not a race - and when businesses get it right, an have a proper understanding of tanning, success is imminent (Source: Press Release via tanningofamerica.com)."

Sound boring? Somewhat, but to be fair the public hasn't flipped nay page yet so the jury's still out.  I venture to say the book seems likely to become the next marketing "bible" of sorts.  And if you're not business savvy or simply not interested in marketing trends... no worries. The author assures most can appreciate his book for its cogent portrayal of the hip hop movement.

Diamond Planet

NASA discovers planet made of diamond; faceted in our Milky Way galaxy approximately 4,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Serpens.
Reuters reports:  "The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond."

Notably, a similar discovery was made in 2004 after a mind blowing ten billion, trillion, trillion carat diamond [star] was found 50 light years away from Earth, within the constellation Centaurus. Astronomers dubbed the star "Lucy" after Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds

The Ladies Room

She blew in like a quiet storm; each step hurried but hesitant as if calculating her next. Her lanky frame seemed to droop like a weeping-willow as she shifted past. Suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks. Instinctively I turned toward her as she studied me over like a wounded, stray cat sensing a kind stranger. Our eyes met and I got a glimpse into hell. She was sophisticated but undone as the night's spirits danced on the tip of her tongue. Baby blue eyes set evenly faceted, deep and desperate; complimenting aging fair skin and conservative bleach blond hair. A white blouse and delicate necklace fashioned her neck. Holding handbag under elbow; long, bony fingers bent over the burlap. I sensed a lost soul and prepared to show my moral compass....I too have been down that dark alley. Unabashed the lady looked at me square. Her rich fiancé cheats - a narcissistic whore fat on pride…his version of love…a dish served cold. “…told me he will continue his affair...he’s probably with her now, she lamented...but loves me first and wants to marry me…should I…we’re engaged to be married?” I blinked and like a hush all to be heard was the rush of tap water from the nearby faucet; as a lone third party hunched over the sink, coyly washing her hands trying to mimic irrelevance [in contrast] though listening intently as I began to speak. I happened to see the lady after leaving the restaurant that night. I sat at the red light watching her ghostly figure cross the busy intersection. She was heading back to her hotel.

Cliché.
